ADSL
ADSL Broadband is a service available on BT PSTN telephone lines. It is available to most customers who reside within approximately 10 Kilometers of an ADSL enabled local exchange.
ADSL provides a permanent Internet connection for a fixed monthly cost ( no call charges for Internet access). The cost is kept low through "Contention" whereby a number of users are "sharing" the same bandwidth.
Home users can take advantage of the 50:1 contention Domestic version of ADSL offering up to 8Mbit/sec download ans up to 400Kbit/sec upload speeds.
Business users can select from the SOHO range for small businesses or the premium 20:1 contention Business range for heavier usage.
Larger business users can select a Premium 20:1 contention service with download speeds of up to 8Mbit/sec and upload speed of up to 800Kbit/sec.
All ADSL services are provided with a single static IP address, ideal if you need to run a mail server, Voice over IP or VPN connections.
ADSL download and upload speeds refer to the maximum speed achievable. Due to the nature of the Internet and ADSL in particular the maximum sustainable speed is unlikely to exceed 90% of the rated speed, and could at times be substantially lower.
Max ADSL
As of the First of May 2006, we are now offering up to 8mb ADSL. Max ADSL utilises the current generation of ADSL technologies, this means that most if not all ADSL router/modems will be able to support these speeds without purchasing new hardware.
The maximum download speed (8Mbit/second) is dependant upon line quality and distance from exchange. As a general guidline, customers within 2.5km of the BT exchange will normally achieve a maximum download speed of near to 8Mbit/second. At 3.5 Km the download speed is likely to drop to around 5Mbit/second, and at 4.5 Km the speed may drop to around 3Mbit/second. ADSL Max is not recommended for use on distant connections or where line quality is very poor.
We offer MAX to both Capped Domestic customers (up to 8 Mb download 448Kb upload) and Capped Business customers (up to 8 Mb download 832 Kb upload). As with all ADSL the actual speed of the connection is dependant on line quality and distance.

Which Should I choose, Business or Domestic ADSL?
ADSL Line Upgrade All new ADSL services are subject to a £40.00 line upgrade charge levied by BT. This charge is passed on to the customer at cost. If you wish to migrate your service to Interdart, please call us for further information. Migration from another provider is free.
Router or Modem? We strongly recommend using an ADSL router rather than the cheaper USB Modem for the following reasons:
- A Router allows many PCs to be connected at the same time.
- Most PCs have Ethernet connections installed, and if not then cards are cheap and readily available.
- Improved security, routers have a built-in NAT firewall, modems can leave your computer exposed to malware.
- If something goes wrong, a router is easier to debug and fix or replace than a USB Modem.
We do not supply or provide installation support of ADSL Modems. Instead we offer the following range of ADSL routers preconfigured for your ADSL connection. All these routers have a built-in four port ethernet switch and can provide packet filtering, port forwarding, network address translation and IPSec L2TP and PPTP VPN support. Routers are supplied with a single ADSL microfilter, additional filters are available at £9.50.

How Contention Works
In reality the contention appears to be more like 500:10 rather than 50:1. As the number of sharing connections increases so the effect of other traffic on your speed becomes smaller. The available bandwidth between your local exchange and the Internet is shared between all the users on the exchange. For example if there are 1000 home 500Kb connections, there will be at least 10,000Kb of bandwidth available shared between all the users.
In order to further ensure fairness, Interdart apply a prioritisation rule on all ADSL services. Prioritisation is based on calculated moving averages of each customer's input and output traffic. All users start with priority 0. Any connection utilising 100% of their rated connection capacity continuously for 30 minutes will have their priority set to 1. Users utilising 100% for approximately 7 hours will have their priority set to 2. Heavy users taking 100% of their maximum capacity for more than 20 hours will have their priority set to 3. Internet Traffic is routed according to the assigned priority. In general this has the effect of reducing any adverse effect on normal traffic when a large number of users are making simultaneous heavy demands on the service. When a customer's utilisation drops, then the priority will be reset back to 0 based on the recalculated moving average. If the average utilisation remains below 20% then the connection will remain in priority 0. This will have no detrimental effect on your ADSL maximum bandwidth nor on your contention ratio, however users in priority 3 may find their throughput and performance is substancially reduced. The purpose is solely to provide the best possible service and response times to regular users.
Priority bands 0 and 1 will honour TCP/IP QOS flags, providing improved performance for interactive and real-time services such as Voip.
Phone services incompatible with ADSL
Some BT phone line services are not compatible with the provision of ADSL. If you wish to order ADSL on a phone line that has one of these services then the service must first be removed.
Incompatible Services
ISDN30 (Cannot be converted)
ISDN2 or BT Highway (Line must be converted back to a single PSTN connection)
PBX Lines
Auxiliary lines
Red ABC Alarm services
Redcare services (Most can now be converted)
Caller display CD50
Some PDQ Equipment (Credit card swipe machines) - check with the manufacturer
